Hanky Panky Soundsystem was born on June 15th 1996. The name was suggested as one founder member had recently been tattooed at Hanky Panky’s tattoo studio in Amsterdam. Significantly, in light of <the future style of the parties, the name can mean ‘mischief’, being naughty or up to some tom foolery. Hanky Panky was set up by six clubbers, who were inspired after stepping in to Generate November 98help organise a birthday party in a local Peterborough pub. The birthday party appropriately enough was for a woman named Dawn. The clubbers partied through the early nineties growth of the techno and house movement, and they could draw upon the influence and experience of Megadog, Final Frontier, Tribal Gathering, The Orbit, Atomic Jam, Pendragon, Escape From Samsara as well as the free festival scene and events like Castlemorton. Right from the start Hanky Panky was run by clubbers for clubbers and it has been a firm belief that the soundsystem should never lose its link with the nations’ dancefloors. If you are going to put on good parties then you need the eyes and ears of a discerning clubber. To this end when not putting on parties the members of the soundsystem may be found on dancefloors in London, Leeds, Birmingham, Nottingham and in various woods and fields across the land throughout the summer free party season

The summer of 1996 saw an explosion of free party activity in the Peterborough area sparked off by . These free-parties were inspirational to Hanky Panky. The parties showed a whole new type of partying, one that was free of the restrictions of clubland, the stuffy hot atmosphere, high entry prices and arrogant bouncers. Furthermore, it offered visuals and surroundings far superior to any club, namely those provided by Mother Earth. Seeing the sun rise while listening to some great music is an unforgettable experience. The seeds for future escapades were planted in Hanky Panky...
